Garden Jobs for April
Frost tender vegetables like runner beans can now be sown in pots under cover, as can herbs like basil.
Sow winter flowering pansies from seed under cover to have a good display next January!
Prune your tender evergreens, such as ceonothus (Californian Lilac) and choisya – and reshape any evergreen hedges that are planted with box, golden privet or laurel.
Pin back and tie in new growth on climbers and other perennials, as you can reshape the plant much more easily while the growth is green and flexible.
Prune your fuchsias now – hardy varieties can be cut to within 3 inches of the ground.
If you have spring bulbs that have ‘gone over’ you can get better growth for next year if you deadhead them, and then feed and water until the foliage dies back .
If you’ve been growing herbs from seed, plant up the herbs for your herb garden into a bigger sized pot.
Feed strawberries in containers with a special strawberry feed.
Remember to water pots more as the weather warms up.
